Winter Solstice in the Typhoon Shelter

Home to the Typhoon Shelter on the shortest day of the year, in time to see the sunset. The Winter Solstice Festival is an important night in Hong Kong for family reunions.

a few words about this exploration in progress...

For a few years now, I have owned a teak wood Chinese motor junk, moored inside Hong Kong Island's Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter.

Although I've lived in Asia for many years, a boat and all that is associated with it is still a new experience for me. Aside from travel away from Hong Kong, the office, and home, I try to spend as much time as possible onboard and in and around the Typhoon Shelter.

The Typhoon Shelter is a unique environment, with daily encounters with luxury yachts, excursion and tour boats, working harbour boats, fishermen, sampans, marine police launches, dragon boat racing teams, and the handful of "westerners" who choose to make the Shelter a favorite part of Hong Kong. It is surrounded by shipyards, provisioners shops, private marina clubs, high rise condos, the skyline of modern Hong Kong, and the South China Sea.

I'd like to invite you to join me from time to time as I continue to explore what is to me a fascinating part of Hong Kong.
