Cook Aboard Sampan

The cooking sampan makes its rounds at lunch time in the Typhoon Shelter. A two man operation. One drives, really fast. The other cooks, really fast. Aberdeen Typhooon Shelter, Hong Kong Island.

Home by Sampan

Home by sampan. Revisiting a photo from seven years ago now. Ah Shing ferrying me to my boat on a dark night by the light of his sampan's single dangling bulb. From the deck of Watermark, Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter, Hong Kong Island South

Morning Swim

The view from the Aberdeen Boat Club this morning.  Taking advantage of the pool for a morning swim also leads to having some spectacular views of the Typhoon Shelter.

Boat Yards and Luxury Condos

Boat repair yards at the foot of luxury residential condo towers overlooking the Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter. The industrial boat yards and associated shore based marine businesses, although very important for the continuation as a working harbour, are frequently photoshopped out of promotional billboards and advertisements for these property developments that have sprung up around the Typhoon Shelter. Working Boats of the Typhoon Shelter

A motor junk and one of the Jumbo Floating Restaurant Ferries pass fishing trawlers at anchor in the Aberdeen Channel.   The island of Ap Lei Chau in in the background.

Jumbo Ferry Pier

Jumbo Kingdom Pier, the departure point for the ferry that makes the five minute run from it's Shum Wan Road mini park to the huge floating restaurant in the middle of the Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter. My most famous neighbor. Always worth a stop to see the dramatic play of light at sunset. Hong Kong Island South.

Exploring the Southern Islands: Bamboo Chinese Opera Theater

A traditional bamboo temporary Chinese Opera theater in the final stages of construction.

Amazingly intricate construction of the roof supporting structure, all with only bamboo and strapping, designed to be quickly disassembled once the performances are over.

The Seven and the Dragon in the Typhoon Shelter

The leaders of my former team at Ralph Lauren (and friends for many years now), gathered for a pre Chinese New Year dinner aboard Jumbo Floating Restaurant in the Typhoon Shelter.  It was great to have them all join me in my neighborhood for the evening.

Chinese New Year Morning

On this first day of the Chinese New Year, the dawn was greeted with the sound of fog horns and very heavy mists over the Typhoon Shelter. Aberdeen, Hong Kong Island.

My new neighbor along side Watermark this morning, a brand new first-time-in-the-water Benateau sailing yacht. Welcome to the Typhoon Shelter! Aberdeen, Hong Kong Island.

Exploring Aberdeen and Hong Kong Island South - Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year decorations going up to welcome in the Year of the Dog.  Aberdeen Square, Hong Kong Island South.

This is where a lot of the elderly residents come to chat, have a bite to eat, get some fresh air. I am glad they are making it so festive for them.

Jumbo, a Different View

Jumbo Floating Restaurant, as seen from her less public and less glamorous, but still impressive, side and rear view. It's hard to visualize how truly massive this floating interconnected complex really is. Aberdeen Typhoon Shelter, Hong Kong Island
